Abstract

Six potato varieties were used to investigate the effect of temperature on sprouting and rooting. GA and CS©ü, each with two concentrations, were treated to determine the effect on breaking tuber dormancy.
The results are summarized as follows:
1. The optimum temperature for sprouting and rooting of most varieties was 20¡É. But for Nook Sack and Denali the optimum temperature was 30¡É. The result indicated that high temperature is required for sprouting in those two varieties. The growth of sprouts and roots of the six varieties were severely suppressed at below 10¡É.
2. It took 5.3 and 14.2 days to sprouting and rooting, respectively, in Superior. Nook Sack was the slowest in sprouting and rooting.
3. GA 5ppm treatment gave better sprout elongation than GA 2ppm, but root growth was better with GA 2ppm than with GA 5ppm. With CS©ü 20§¢¡¤m^(-3) treatment rooting and sprouting were excellent, but seed potato pieces were decayed with 40§¢¡¤m^(-3) treatment.
4. The growth of sprout and root was slower with CS©ü treatments in comparison with GA treatments, but sprout diameter was increased with CS©ü treatments.
5. Arkula and Denali responded more sharply in sprouting and rooting by GA and CS©ü treatments.
